When a teacher comes into a classroom, students directly welcome and greet him/her with a greeting expression. There’ll be a dialogue between the teacher and the students.
Here is the example of the greeting dialogue:
Students : “Good morning, sir.”
Teacher : “Good morning, students.”
Students : “How are you today?”
Teacher : “I’m fine, and you?”
Students : “Fine, too.”
Note : The students, here, have been taught and exposed to such kind of dialogue in the previous grade, so it’ll be ok for the students to do the greeting dialogue like that.
Such dialogue above must be done when starting a lesson, when a the teacher is entering the classroom. This is a good habit to make the students familiar with the English conversation.
The first chapter of the English learning is about “Greeting and Parting”.
The first time, before teaching The greeting and parting theme, the teacher can start singing a song related. The teacher can use, for instance the following songs to begin:
1. Good morning
Good morning, good morning
The best to you this morning
How are you?, how are you?
I hope you’re feeling fine
And happy all the time 2x
2. Hello how are you
Hello hello how are you?
Fine, thanks fine, thanks how are you?
Hello hello how are you?
I’m fine, thank you.
The songs above are just some examples, the teacher can apply some other songs. The song at the beginning of the lesson is intended to create an exciting, spirit atmosphere to the students. The students will be enthusiastic then.
After singing a song, the teacher can make a brainstorming before discussing about the main lesson. The brainstorming here can be a question-anwer activity around the unit will be learned afterwards. Here are some examples of the question adressed to the students in this stage at brainstorming:
1. What should you say if you meet your teacher in the morning?
The student anwers, I will say “Good morning”
2. It is at 12.00 o’clock. What will you say to someone you meet?
The students anwer, I shall say “Good day”
3. Look at the time on the blackboard, what can you greet or say to your friend?
The student anwers, Good evening.
4. What will you say to your mother if you would like to go to bed?
I say “good night” to my mom.
5. When leaving someone, we say . . .
Good bye...
The teacher can use those kinds of questions, or just pick one or two, or make other quesions related.
Next, the teacher continued to the main lesson.
GREETINGS AND PARTINGS
Greetings | Partings |
Good morning | Good bye |
Good aftrnoon | Good night |
Good evening | Bye |
Good day, good noon | Good luck |
Hi | Take care |
Hello | See you |
How are you | See you later |
How do you do | See you tomorrow |
Nice to meet you | See you next time |
Glad to see you | I have to go now |
Greetings:
There are two kinds of greetings that we must know. One is formal and the other is informal greeting. The formal greeting, for instance:
- Good morning
- Good day
- Good afternoon
- Good evening
The informal ones, for example :
- Hi,
- Hello
Other kinds of greeting:
- How are you?
- How is everything?
- How is life?
- How have you been?
- Etc.
Partings:
- Good bye
- Bye bye
- Good luck
- Good night
- See you
- See you later
- See you tomorrow
- See you next time
- I have to go now
- Take care
- Etc.
The students are drilled to pronounce those greetings and partings several times repeatedly.
To avoid a monotonous and bored atmosphere, the teacher can practise the students with the vocabularies excersises through a game. The game can be explained such as follows:
- The game is, the questions which are addressed to the students.
- The game relates to the chapter or unit being learned right now
- The questions are based on the sum of the students subracted by one.
- The students try to answer the question spoken by the teacher as fast as possible.
- When the student anwers correctly, he/she will pass the game
- When the student answers incorrectly, he/she won’t pass the game and he/she can not anwer the question anymore until the next question.
- There’ll be one student left. The last student who can not anwer the question correctly will be punished to sing a song in front of the class. The game is interesting for students. It sounds like a competition among the students. They will try to answer the question as fast as possible to save himself/herself from punishment. Of course every student doesn’t want to stand in front of the class to sing a song. The last student who can not anwer the question means that he/she is the most stupid of all.
Here are the examples of the questions submitted:
- Roni meets Ana at 04.30. He says . . .
- The sun rises in the east. We say . . .
- The teacher draw a picture of a situation in the evening. There is a picture of a moon on it. He then ask the students, What greeting should we say as we see a picture on the blackboard? The students then try to anwer it.
- When we leave someone we say . . .
- Etc.
